What to Expect in Your First Yoga Class at Nami Yoga Studio
A Beginner-Friendly Guide for New Students in Kyoto & Tokyo
If you’ve been thinking about trying yoga but feel a little nervous, you’re not alone. At Nami Yoga Studio in Kyoto and Tokyo, many of our students are brand new to yoga—or returning after a long break. Whether you're here for your physical health, stress relief, or simply curious about mindful movement, we're here to welcome you with open arms.
This guide will walk you through exactly what to expect in your first yoga class, from what to wear to how the class flows, and how we help you feel supported from the moment you walk through our door.
🧘♂️ Do I Need to Be Flexible or Fit?
Absolutely not.
You don’t need to touch your toes, balance on one leg, or know any Sanskrit. Our classes are designed for real people with real bodies, and we offer clear guidance and options for every level.
At Nami, we believe yoga is for everyone—all ages, body types, and experience levels.
🏠 When You Arrive: A Warm Welcome Awaits
Please arrive 10–15 minutes early so you have time to settle in.
Our team will greet you and help you check in.
We’ll show you around the studio, where you can leave your shoes, store your bag, and place your phone in a locker (digital detox time!).
You don’t need to bring anything—we provide mats, blocks, straps, bolsters, and blankets.
👚 What Should I Wear?
Wear comfortable, stretchy clothes that allow you to move. Think leggings, a t-shirt, or a breathable top.
You’ll be barefoot during class (yoga is traditionally practiced without shoes—see our blog on barefoot culture!), so no special footwear is needed.
💬 What the Class Will Be Like
All of our teachers begin with a short introduction and check-in with the students in the room. A typical class may include:
Breath awareness or a short meditation
A gentle warm-up
Standing and seated postures
Use of props for support or deeper sensation
Cool-down stretches
Relaxation (Savasana) to finish
We move at a comfortable pace, and the teacher will offer options and modifications so you can practice safely and confidently.
🪷 No Mirrors = No Pressure
Nami Yoga Studio doesn’t use mirrors. Why? Because we believe yoga is about feeling, not performing. Without mirrors, there’s less comparison and more inner awareness. You’ll learn to trust your body and breath, not how you look from the outside.
💬 Will the Teacher Adjust or Touch Me?
Our teachers offer verbal cues first, and only give hands-on adjustments with your consent. You are always free to decline. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities.
🧘 Which Class Should I Start With?
For beginners, we recommend starting with:
Hatha Yoga – Great for learning foundational poses and breathwork
Slow Flow – Mindful movement with time to explore
Flow & Meditate – Gentle vinyasa with meditation at the end
Private Sessions – One-on-one time tailored to your needs
Feel free to contact us and we’ll help you choose the best class for your goals and experience level.
🙏 After Class: How You’ll Feel
Many students say they feel:
More relaxed and calm
Surprised by how much they could do
Grateful for time away from screens and distractions
A little sore (in a good way!)
You may also feel emotional—that’s okay! Yoga helps us release tension, both physically and emotionally.
🌸 You’re Not Just Taking a Class—You’re Joining a Community
At Nami Yoga Studio, we’re more than a place to move—we’re a place to connect, slow down, and be yourself. Whether you’re local or just visiting Kyoto or Tokyo, we invite you to make our studio your sanctuary.
