Backbend from Baby Backbend to Drop Back

A story is told at the Iyengar Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India. “In Guruji's (BKS Iyengar guru) backbend, there is no bend in the back.” What do you think this means?

Backbend poses create a bow in the back, which people tend to think is impossible for people with stiff bodies and is bad for the lower back. In Iyengar yoga, a backbend is a supple and strong stretch of the spine backwards. It develops a strong and healthy spine as well as a strong spirit to overcome challenges.

In this workshop, after preparing by experiencing the interlocking movements of various body parts, we will step through backbend poses of varying levels. We will practice safely and accurately according to the Iyengar yoga method, so it is also recommended for those who are not good at backbends.

Target asana: Baby backbend to advanced backbend asana (Bhujangasana, Urdhva Dhanurasana, Viparita Dandasana, drop back basics)
